I'm Not Ready to Say Goodbye to Summer (and the Northwest Side Isn't Either)
Nope. Not doing it. You can't make me put away the patio chairs or the boat yet!
There's this stretch of late summer on Chicago's Northwest Side that I look forward to all year — when the light goes gold a little earlier, the porches fill up after dinner, and Jefferson Park, Norwood Park, and Gladstone Park feel like the coziest little pocket of the whole city. The lemonade-and-lightning-bugs season isn't over. So before anyone starts whispering the word "pumpkin," let's squeeze every last drop out of it together.
Here's how I'm planning to hold onto summer around here — hope to see you there!
Chase down a Sunday market morning ☀️
Is there anything better than a slow Sunday with a coffee in one hand and a tote bag over your shoulder? The **Jefferson Park Sunday Market** (4822 N. Long Ave.) keeps rolling on the 2nd and 4th Sundays clear into late October, so you've got zero excuse. Grab peak-season tomatoes, say hi to the makers, and let the morning go exactly nowhere. That's the good stuff.
Get ONE more pool day in 🏊
Little-known brag: Norwood Park is home to the only outdoor pool with a water slide on the entire North Side. If you've got kiddos — or you're just young at heart and unbothered — go get that last splash in while the sun's still generous. Summer's not over till the towels are packed away, and I say we stall!
Let the festivals carry you into fall 🎸
The Northwest Side does not go quietly. Throwback Music Fest in Norwood Park (Sept. 11–13) brings classic cars, vintage finds, and live music — basically nostalgia with a soundtrack. Then the beloved Norwood Park Fall Fest (Sept. 18–20) picks up right after. Block them off now. This is the neighborhood at its most alive, and it's the best way I know to ease out of summer without actually admitting it's ending.
Take the scenic, delicious route 🥟
Make a whole afternoon of it: wander the Copernicus Center on Lawrence, pop into the Ed Paschke Art Center on Higgins (free, and genuinely cool), then follow your nose down the Milwaukee Avenue food corridor for pierogi, something sweet, and a coffee for the walk home. It's the kind of easy, unhurried day that reminds you why people fall for this part of the city. Hit Chiquita Scoops for Ice Cream in Gladstone Park or the brand new Fork & Coin in Portage Park
And then — the porch 🌇
Honestly? My favorite thing about summer out here doesn't cost a dime. It's a bungalow front porch, a warm evening, and the sound of a whole tree-lined block winding down together. The Northwest Side was practically built for it — sturdy old brick homes, deep backyards, streets made for an after-dinner stroll. Sit out there long enough and you start to understand why so many people put down roots here and never leave. (I may be a little biased — helping folks find their spot on these blocks is kind of my favorite thing. But that's a conversation for another day!)
